Going Green - the Twilight Series
You know those book publishers? yea - them…the guys that make books and stuff. Well it seems that many of them have jumped on the eco-green bandwagon; folks such as Random House Inc., Scholastic Inc. and Simon & Schuster have all announced some form of environmental initiatives. The Hachette Book Group, the purveyours of such book-tastically awesome titles like the Twillight series, recently announced a range of environmental goals that they are going to be a part of… Apparently this new policy will reduce “greenhouse gas emissions by 20 percent by the end of the next decade and, by 2012″ and increase the amount of recycled fiber that they use.
huh.
Does anyone else see this as a too-little-too-late-and-who-cares-anyways? Dontcha think they would have a bigger impact on the evnironment and their bottom line if they stopped printinting so many books? Focused on a digital strategy? Or maybe a limited production run of books that are clearly not going to be that popular?
No, no. I am serious.
I love to read books - and I go to the library more that your average non-kindle owning citizen - but have you seen how many books there are at your local book superstore that are priced at 10% their original price? Some claim that it is a loss leader approach, but if you look at the titles, these are books that probably should never have been printed in the first place…or at least, there should have been a much smaller printinr run. anyways. I find the whole thing ironically tragic. Book publishser going green in the digital era. bah humbug!

AOL Fun Facts
So, AOL announced that they are laying off a third of their staff (2,500 peeps). And there are a lot of other interesting numbers and dynamics to dissect with regards to their planned stock spin-out from Time-Warner. The one number that shocked me the most is that nearly half of their revenues (and two-thirds of their ebitda) comes from dial-up customers. Yes. Dial-up. Yes, from charging people who are accessing the internet at low bit-rate bandwidth over the phone line - ala 1990-esque modem technologies. HALF OF THEIR REVENUES!

McRib Locator
I heard that the McRib was making its rounds…like the ephemeral Shamrock Shake, the presence of the McRib brings peals of laughter to the devotees of the Golden Arches. And there is a site devoted to the tracking of the famed sandwich chock-full-o-sauce and reconstituted pork meat, shaped in the form of a phake rib. Check it out.
