McDonalds Habit of Releasing Unsuccessful Burgers and Why it Works
McDonald’s plans to release a new burger this fall.
Rejoice!
It is a 1/3 lbs angus burger priced at a reasonable $3.99. It has been served up in a few test markets such as LA and Columbus for over the past 18 months. It comes in 3 heart-stopping versions: the deluxe, mushroom & swiss, and bacon & cheese. Apparently the test market results have been promising. Note that the golden arches has not launched a successful new burger product since 1973 (think McRib, McDLT, Big ‘n Tasty)…
So why do they keep trying to introduce new burgers even though it has been over 3 decades since they have been successfully able to do so? Methinks it is because some marketing genius over there knows that it creates fantastic buzz… and that buzz helps to feed this mega-corporation’s finely tuned and well-honed same-store money making machine. The buzz brings people in - to try something new. If it becomes the new Big Mac (which it probably won’t) then fantastic! But if not, oh well, it will remind people of how much they love their quarter pounder with cheese or the Big Mac and life goes on. But they came in. They tried it. Maybe they even came in and got a Monopoly scratcher with it that baits them to come in again. (note that McDonalds always does their Monopoly promo in the fall…coincidentally at the same time they plan to launch the Angus Burger….hrm).
McDonalds is the #1 burger chain in the world and one of the top performers on the Dow Jones … able to grow and prosper even in the current arduous economic times. Says CEO Jim Skinner, “McDonald’s continues to demonstrate its ongoing commitment to driving shareholder value. Through first quarter 2009, the Company returned $12.9 billion toward the $15 billion to $17 billion targeted cash return to shareholders by the end of 2009. Given our strong balance sheet and operating performance, we fully expect to meet the target this year.” Oh, and they are also soon to be the largest corporate land owner in Russia.

Good marketing.
Though, i think this is kinda scary marketing: click here. (turn the volume down though…yes it is safe for work)
If you are a repeat visitor to renchin.com, you will know that i had to nuke the content of this blog because of virus-related reasons.
sigh.
But here are a few McDonald’s related reposts from renchin.com’s past:
In the Late ’80s, McDonalds offered the McDLT sandwich… Fresh from the petri dish from the McDonald’s labs, this little burger beast was sold in a novel polystyrene packaging that looked like two burger containers fused together.

The McDLT’s tag line was “Keep the hot side hot, and the cool side cool” The meat and bottom bun was packaged separately from the top bun which was housed wiith the lettuce, tomato, cheese, pickles, and sauce goop. The ebullient eater would do the final sandwich prep his or her self by combining the two hot and cold sides just before eating. exciting!
Genius! the packaging! the tagline! the commercial!
Rather suddenly, the climate and conditions for the McDLT changed and the environmental-friendly hullabaloo was all the rage and the polystrene packaging was no longer cool… Given that the packaging was a core part of the McDLT experience, the sandwich was 86′d
Lo, the australopitecine McDLT was replaced by the McLean Deluxe in 1991 whose line soon died out in 1994 after its carrageenan-ladened “burger” failed to catch on. The neanderthalian McLean was survived by the Arch Deluxe, featuring a higher-end roll and an ooh-la-la dijon based sauce to appeal to the sophisticated palate. This line soon died out in 1996. Behold, its current successor, The Big N’ Tasty! Introduced in 1997, the big n tasty has been ruling supreme for nearly a decade…though some may remember it as the Big Xtra.
hrm.
Fast food research is fun and all, but really the point of this post was the Jason Alexander video for the McDLT, the most brilliant species of the lineage.
Swine Flu Meets Twitter, Panic Ensues
at first glance, it seems helpful. Then, you begin to realize that perhaps it will create more panic and hysteria than the traditional media (including internet news sites) could ever dream of: http://twitter.com/veratect
